Agriculture Ministry Convenes Public-Private Dialogue to Accelerate Growth of Liberia's Poultry and Livestock Sectors
[Monrovia, Liberia, August 3, 2026] – The Ministry of Agriculture, through its Rural Economic Transformation Project (RETRAP), has launched a week-long Public-Private Dialogue aimed at strengthening Liberia's poultry and piggery value chains by bringing together farmers, agribusinesses, government institutions, development partners, and other key stakeholders to identify sector challenges and develop practical solutions for sustainable growth.
The dialogue seeks to foster stronger collaboration between the public and private sectors while creating a shared roadmap for expanding livestock production, improving market access, and attracting greater investment into Liberia's poultry and piggery industries.
The first phase of the dialogue has brought together over 30 participants from Montserrado, Margibi, Bomi, Grand Cape Mount, and Gbarpolu Counties, while a second session will convene stakeholders from Bong, Nimba, Lofa, and Grand Gedeh Counties.
Throughout the week, participants will identify critical constraints affecting the livestock sector, develop policy briefs highlighting priority issues, formulate recommendations, and produce action plans to guide future interventions.
The dialogue will also focus on strengthening partnerships among farmers, processors, marketers, Small and Medium Enterprises (SMEs), financial institutions, and other value chain actors. Discussions will explore aggregation models that improve market linkages, enhance investment opportunities, and increase the competitiveness of Liberia's poultry and piggery industries.
In addition, stakeholders will share successful farming models and best practices, participate in investment roundtables, establish regional working groups, document lessons learned, and develop mechanisms to monitor the implementation of agreed actions.
Speaking at the opening session, RETRAP Program Officer Mr. James T. Moore said the dialogue reflects the Ministry of Agriculture's commitment to transforming the livestock sector into a major contributor to food security, employment, and economic growth.
"We gather as one community, united by a shared vision: to strengthen Liberia's livestock sector as a driver of food security, rural prosperity, and national development. Across our counties, farmers and entrepreneurs are already demonstrating what is possible—from innovative piggery enterprises to resilient poultry farms."
Mr. Moore acknowledged that producers continue to face challenges, including limited access to finance, veterinary services, quality feed, and reliable markets. However, he emphasized that the dialogue provides an important platform for stakeholders to address these constraints and develop practical solutions jointly.
"Experiences across West Africa have shown that when governments, the private sector, and development partners engage in structured dialogue, the livestock sector flourishes. Liberia now has the opportunity to adapt those lessons and position its poultry and piggery industries as engines of inclusive growth."
The Public-Private Dialogue forms part of the Ministry of Agriculture's broader efforts under RETRAP to modernize Liberia's livestock sector, strengthen value chains, improve farmer livelihoods, and advance the Government's Liberians Feed Yourselves Agenda, which seeks to increase domestic food production and reduce dependence on imports.
