Liberia Allocates $2 Million to War & Economic Crimes Court
The Liberian Government has announced an annual appropriation of $2 million as part of its renewed effort to establish the War & Economic Crimes Court (WECC) in Liberia. This initiative marks a significant step towards addressing past injustices and ensuring justice for victims of the country's 14-year civil conflict.
The office WECC will function as a semi-independent body and will receive funding as a grant line item within the Ministry of Justice. The $2 million allocation will be disbursed in equal quarterly installments of $500,000. Deputy Information Minister Daniel O. Sando disclosed this information during a press briefing at the Ministry of Information on Tuesday, May 5. 2026.
Furthermore, the office responsible for establishing the war and economic crimes court is mandated to submit quarterly operational and financial reports to the Office of the President through the Minister of Justice. President Joseph N. Boakai has asked that the WECC office present a comprehensive plan for resource mobilization and stakeholder engagement within 60 days. This plan should include identifying funding partners and engagement strategies.
The establishment of the War & Economic Crimes Court was recommended by the Truth & Reconciliation Commission, which investigated the civic conflict that resulted in the deaths of approximately a quarter of a million people. The court aims to prosecute those bearing the greatest responsibility for the atrocities committed during the conflict.
While previous administrations failed to establish the court, President Boakai's administration has made a notable commitment to pursuing justice for the thousands of victims affected by the war.
