Liberia’s Minister of Information, Cultural Affairs and Tourism, Hon. Jerolinmek Piah, says the Government of Liberia is focusing on the re-establishment of the National Cultural Center to promote positive Liberian cultural values and train cultural artists.

“We had the National Cultural Center at Kendeja and it was the center for the promotion of our cultural heritage, but was demolished in 2008 to give way for the construction of a hotel. Since then, we have not had a Cultural Center. This Government is planning to re-establish it and will work with all stakeholders”, Minister Piah said when he met visiting Liberia’s iconic cultural artist, Princess Fatu Gayflor on Thursday.

Fatu, known as the Golden Voice of Liberia and Princess of Liberian Folk Songs, is one of the products of Culture Center since the late 1970s and a former member of the Liberia National Culture Troupe.

“This is good news for Liberia. We must promote our culture to the world. Let’s work together and do all we can to bring back the Center and make the National Cultural Troupe what it must be”, says the ‘Golden Voice of Liberia’ as she conveyed her readiness to work with MICAT to achieve the goals.

Fatu Gayflor earlier in her meeting with the MICAT boss revisited her long journey as a 13 years’ old who was discovered, brought to the National Cultural Center in 1978 where she was nurtured and went on to champion Liberia’s traditional music to the rest of the world. She recently returned to the country from the United States for the first time in 25 years.

MICAT oversees the Cultural Center and the Cultural Troupe.
