Pres. Boakai Returns Home Amidst Rousing Welcome, With Great Optimism

President Joseph N. Boakai returned home Tuesday, October 6, from the United States, amid a rousing welcome and with great optimism about stronger international cooperation on trade, investment, and security. President Boakai's nearly two-week visit featured high-level bilateral engagements with U.S. officials to deepen Liberia's partnership with Washington and advance its development priorities.
After his address to the 81st United Nations General Assembly in New York on September 24, the Liberian Leader met and held discussions with several U.S. Congressional members and officials aimed at strengthening Liberia - U.S. relations.
President Boakai met and discussed with the U.S. Senator Angela Alsobrooks of Maryland and Congressman Gregory Meeks, a ranking member of the House Foreign Affairs Committee on matters of trade, investment, energy, infrastructure and security cooperation.
A major focus of discussion with Senator Alsobrooks was the implementation of the June 26 Memorandum of Understanding between Liberia and the State of Maryland, intended to expand opportunities in areas including education, agriculture and technology and the creation of jobs.
President Boakai's meeting with the U.S. Congressman Meeks highlighted Liberia's role as a non-permanent member of the UN Security Council for 2026-2027 and the need for continuous cooperation on regional peace and global security.
In his address to the 81st United Nations General Assembly, President Boakai called for Climate Justice and reminded world leaders of Liberia's contribution to global emissions despite its vulnerability to coastal erosion.
The Liberian Leader also demanded permanent African seats on the UN Security Council, contending that the multilateral system's credibility is being threatened by selective application of international principles.
President Boakai also met with White House Senior Advisor for African Affairs Massad Boulos and discussed the need for sustained engagement on Liberia's development priorities and broader regional challenges.
In his meeting with Dr Paula White-Cain at the White House, President Boakai focused on the historic ties between Liberia and the United States, as well as faith and leadership.
Dr Paula White-Cain visited Liberia during the July 26 celebration and was awarded Liberia's highest National Honour by President Boakai.
Deputy Information Minister for Public Affairs, Mr Daniel O Sando, said President Boakai's visit reinforces Liberia's long-standing relationship with the United States and elevated it to a more practical development partnership focused on tangible economic and security outcomes.
Minister Sando made the roundup of the President's visit at the Ministry of Information's regular press briefing held Tuesday, October 6, 2026.
Upon his return to Monrovia, the Liberian Leader and delegation attended a special Thanksgiving service at the Rock International Church along the Roberts International Airport (RIA) highway.
The President also addressed Journalists on Liberia's participation in the UN General Assembly high-level debates and side events hosted by the Government to reposition Liberia as a global voice, and the conference with the Diaspora community in the United States.
