Reports indicate that more than 600 people have perished in Nepal and seven in China, while approximately 3,000 people remain missing as rescue and recovery operations continue amid forecasts of additional rainfall in affected areas.
President Boakai said the scale of the disaster, including the destruction of homes and the loss of loved ones, is deeply heartbreaking for which he extends the solidarity of the Liberian people to families who are anxiously waiting in suspense to access news of the situation of their relatives.
The Liberian Leader particularly commended the rescue teams, local authorities, volunteers, and humanitarian organizations working under extremely difficult conditions to locate survivors and recover victims.
President Boakai also acknowledged the urgent humanitarian needs arising from the disaster, including the challenges authorities face in managing the large number of recovered bodies and assisting families searching for missing relatives. He thanked nations that have already rushed to offer support and urged the international community to increase its response with urgency to Nepal’s appeal for specialized assistance and other critical humanitarian support in handling the mounds of bodies of victims.
“On behalf of the Government and people of Liberia, I extend our deepest sympathies to the Governments and peoples of Nepal and the People’s Republic of China, as Liberia stands with the families in grief over lost loved ones and offer prayers for positive news for those still waiting for information on their relatives,” President Boakai said.
